Kariye Museum (Chora Church) is located in Karagümrük/Edirnekapı, Istanbul. It was a Byzantine church and later converted into a mosque after the conquest.
The building dates back to the 6th century; it was built as a monastery in 534 by Saint Theodosius, rebuilt in the 11th century by Maria Dukaina, and restored in the 14th century by Theodore Metochites, who added the outer narthex and parekklesion.
In 1511, it was converted into a mosque by Atik Ali Pasha; mosaics and frescoes were covered with plaster, while the building’s originality was preserved. In the 20th century, the mosque was closed, and mosaics and frescoes were restored between 1948–1958 with American academic support.
Since 1956, it serves as a museum.
Distance to Kaftan Hotel: 10–15 minutes by taxi.
